Jeff Arend's Chevy Impala SS Funny Car Sets the Pace at US Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 2, 2007 - After three days of time trials and five qualifying sessions, Jeff Arend's Chevy Impala SS will lead the 16-car Funny Car field into final eliminations for the 53rd annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park. The driver of the Checker Schuck's Kragen Chevrolet earned his first career raceday pole award after posting a 4.754 e.t. at 327.51 mph during the prime Friday-night qualifying session.

"We had some issues with dropped cylinders in the heat today, but we're still pumped up about being number one," said Arend. "Back on Friday night, when I got to go meet the media after the session, I was joking around and saying I'd like to come back all weekend, and so far I've been up here three times as the No. 1 guy after all three days of qualifying. When the number held after last night's session, we all pretty much knew it was untouchable in the heat today, but you never allow yourself to look ahead or take anything for granted out here.

"Once we made the last run, dropped cylinder and all, I knew this one dream had really come true and that I was actually the No. 1 qualifier for the first time. The fact that it happened at Indy, at the Mac Tools US Nationals just takes it to another level and makes it even cooler for all of us."

Arend's CSK Chevrolet teammate, Del Worsham, has the second quickest Impala SS in the field and is qualified in the No. 7 spot with a 4.785 e.t. at 323.66 mph. Worsham also ran the second quickest elapsed time in the final qualifying session at 4.856 seconds. Tony Pedregon's Q Racing Chevrolet rounds out the top half of the field in the No. 8 position with a 4.768 second run at 321.04 mph.

"We were on a similar run earlier today when it sheared a blower stud and lost boost," explained Worsham. "I figured if we could keep it in one piece, it would run something close to low of the session. Force's run was a masterpiece, and I feel bad for him since he didn't make the show here, but it was really pretty impossible to run better than a 4.82 (bump) out here today. Our goal was to find a good Indy combination so that we know we can go out here on Monday and get it done. I feel like we did exactly that and it all led up to that last run."

In Pro Stock, 12 GM-branded cars made the 16-car field and they were led by WileyX Pontiac driver Jim Yates who qualified in the No. 2 position, his best effort of the season. Yates turned in sterling performance on Saturday night posting a 6.658-second elapsed time at 206.42 mph, and on Sunday he continued to work toward a winning setup on his GTO.

"We started out a little bit conservatively," s aid Yates. "We worked on our combination and made it through qualifying really well. I'm excited about tomorrow and I think the best runs on this WileyX Pontiac GTO are ahead of us. It's going to be a challenge on Monday to see who can adapt to the changing track conditions. I think we're up to it and I think we can shine. We ran good this afternoon on a track that's going to be hotter than it is tomorrow morning. We were probably the second or third fastest car down that lane and that bodes well for us. During a good weekend you don't just make one good run, you make a lot of good runs - you feel consistent, you feel solid with it.

"We've been good in the right lane, we've run good in the left lane, we've run great on the night run, we've run pretty good on the day run, and that's compared to everybody else. We'll go out tomorrow and let it happen. Qualifying is in the books - it's history. Everything we've done so far is a warm-up. Tomorrow is Indy, it's the big race and the big dog is going to hunt."

Dave Connolly has the quickest Chevy Cobalt is the 16-car field and is qualified in the No. 3 position with a 6.659 e.t. at 206.32 mph.

"We've had a good three days and now it's time to go racing," said Connolly. "It's a long event but we've come out of it pretty good so far. I was especially pleased to get down that right lane and it shows that it's imperative to have lane choice here. We've been pretty fortunate this year as far as lane choice is concerned. We're No. 3 and our Torco Racing Fuels Chevy Cobalt is running pretty good right now. We have a key match up tomorrow with Jason (Line) and I'm ready for it."

Team Chevy's Kurt Johnson has the ACDelco Cobalt qualified in the No. 5 spot after running 6.662 seconds at a track-record speed of 207.30 mph. Justin Humphreys' Pontiac is qualified in the sixth position with a 6.669 second e.t. at 206.67 mph.

"We're pretty happy with our ACDelco Cobalt's performance so far this weekend," said Johnson. "We're using some new components, and it seems to be running well. We haven't run this configuration all year, and it's pretty happy right now. I think we have a horse that can win the race. It's just a matter of getting everything together and making good runs. It will be tough, because there are 16 good cars out there, and each round is going to be a battle, but we're going to see if we can make it happen."

Team Chevy's Jeg Coughlin Jr. is qualified in the No. 8 spot and four-time defending champion Greg Anderson has his Pontiac qualified in the 9 position.

"I can't remember when we've had a U.S. Nationals like this one," said Anderson. "This is certainly not good timing for us to be battling some of these issues, but like they say, tomorrow is a new day, and thank God there a race tomorrow. It wasn't today, it wasn't yesterday, and hopefully we can be a better team tomorrow. That last session wasn't a bad run. We're inching up on it and if we had six or seven more runs maybe we could get a handle on this place."

Kenny Koretsky is qualified in the No. 10 position in a Chevy Cobalt, Greg Stanfield is 12th in a Pontiac, Craig Hankinson is 13th in a Pontiac, Jason Line is 14th in a Pontiac, Mike Edwards is 15th in a Pontiac and Steve Schmidt is 16th in a Chevrolet.

"I can't qualify for Englishtown or Maple Grove but I can qualify for the U.S. Nationals," said Koretsky. "We did some testing today on this car during our two qualifying sessions. We tried a different bar in an attempt to get the four-link right and I think we may have found a happy spot again. We were a little light on clutch on the last run but now we're good for tomorrow. There were a lot of good cars here this weekend and we're just happy we made it. If it wasn't for that first run we'd have been in trouble. When you get here, you have to be ready, and our testing paid off. We tested in Martin, Mich., for two days and we tested here last week for two days. It all pays off. You have to test."

"Our first four qualifying runs were really consistent," explained Stanfield. "Our Pontiac ran from 6.68 to 6.69, but that last run we made a mistake with the car that it definitely didn't like, and now we're going back the other way to what was working for us. We'll have a pretty good setup for raceday once we put everything back together. We'll be ready. It can be anybody's race here on Monday. The track will continue to change and it will come down to who adapts the best. There are a lot of good cars that didn't make this race and if you're in it you can win it."

"We're going to be the in right lane tomorrow so we'll need to be as prepared as possible," Edwards said. "We've been over there in three of the five qualifying runs. We know what not to do, we'll have to figure out what to do. We tried to throw several things at it and I still think we can come up with something that's going to work tomorrow. We're qualifying, and that's the first step. We're going in the right direction, we're not where we'd like to be, but hey, we keep plugging away. You can't give up, you can't get upset. You have to keep going, keep plugging away and everybody working together you get through it. We're qualified for the US Nationals. I won one year when I was qualified 13thso anything can happen."

The third and final round of NHRA Pro FWD qualifying for the 53rd annual Mac Tools US Nationals was completed today at O'Reilly Raceway Park. The three Ecotec Chevy Cobalts that took the top three positions all ran under 7.20 seconds and all three cars will have an opportunity to leave Indianapolis with a national elapsed time record.

Gary Gardella, driving the Red Bull Chevy Cobalt, earned the No. 1 qualifying position with a career-best e.t. of 7.156 seconds at 201.91 mph. Following Gardella in the No. 2 position is current points leader Marty Ladwig whose Lucas Oil Chevrolet posted a 7.175 second e.t. at 199.97 mph. Jason Hunt and the Matco Tools Chevrolet is qualified third with a 7.190 second run at200.59 mph.

"That was much better than yesterday," said Ladwig. "We weren't quite No. 1 so we have a little more work today but you can't really complain about a 7.17. We were pretty happy about that."

"That gets the monkey off our back," said Hunt following his Q3 run. "We just skipped the 7.20s. Everything on our Matco Tools Chevrolet worked just fine - we were totally happy with that. The car was fast and it felt real good. I don't know if we can improve on that but we'll see what the track will give us. If we can stay in that range then I think we have a car that can win here this weekend."

Chevrolet Impala SS Ready for NASCAR 2007 Season

What's new for GM Racing? Well, aside from manufacturing auto parts like GM tail light guards for their race cars, GM also got something new for the motor sports industry. The 2007 season of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series is an important event for GM Racing team for them to unveil a brand new racing machine and an all-new engine. GM will make the NASCAR debut of the Chevrolet Impala SS "Car of Tomorrow" along with R07 small-block V-8 racing engine. Along with the debut of the Chevrolet Impala SS, GM also announced their latest development in testing vehicle aerodynamics called the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) that will be implemented in all GM race cars.

Here is how Kevin Bayless, GM Racing oval track chassis/aero Program Manager explains how the CFD works:
"The best way to describe CFD is a wind tunnel in a computer. CFD is a simulation that predicts the aerodynamic forces acting on a vehicle using computational methods rather than physical measurements. CFD allows engineers and racing teams to evaluate the effects of aerodynamic changes quickly on a computer screen rather than in a conventional wind tunnel.

The CFD software requires a supercomputer because the number of calculations is immense. For example, our aerodynamic models typically have more than 10 million discrete data points that are used to calculate the forces. It really is rocket science."

"CFD allows us to visualize the flow to understand what the air is doing and where the aerodynamic forces are being generated. That's simply not possible with a model or a full-size vehicle in a wind tunnel. CFD also allows us to test aerodynamics without a physical model, which can be helpful in the early stages of a design. We can analyze and compare various alternatives before actually building a prototype vehicle." he further explains.

GM Racing will first implement the CFD aerodynamic simulation system to the next-generation Chevrolet Impala SS that will debut in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. GM said engineers utilized the CFD to gain insight into the effects of the new body shape, front splitter, and adjustable rear wing of the Impala SS. However, GM said although CFD is a powerful engineering tool for testing vehicle aerodynamics, it is not a replacement for the typical wind tunnel and track testing.

Bayless commented: "Although the Car of Tomorrow is highly regulated, it's not a spec race car. As a manufacturer, Chevrolet was able to define many of the details that separate the Impala SS from our competitors' cars. The headlights, grille, portions of the hood, and the tail were areas where GM Racing was able to incorporate Impala SS styling cues and brand identity. These areas are now fixed as part of the NASCAR Impala SS package."

"The computing time required to run CFD programs is a limitation even with a supercomputer," Bayless noted. "A team can run through more tests in a day in a wind tunnel than can be done with CFD. At this point in its development, CFD supplements the testing that's done in wind tunnels and on race tracks. We share the information that GM Racing obtains through CFD with the Chevy teams." he added.

Just wait and see how the Chevrolet Impala SS "Car of Tomorrow" performs at the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series this season.

1964 Chevrolet Impala And A Governor At The Wheel

"It has a 409 V-8," former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves said about his 1964 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport convertible. "That's the important part." Graves got the red convertible 15 years ago. He described it as a car he had to have because of a used 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air four-door sedan that he drove to high school in Salina, Kan. Back then, he desperately wanted a 409-cubic-inch V-8 engine in a car with two fewer doors and a top that went down, but his father thought otherwise, Graves said. He became governor in 1995 and served until January 2003. During his term, the car did not get much use so it had been put together to close a speedy deal at an auction. He patched things up by sending the 171/2-feet-long car to a restoration shop in Hutchinson, Kan., for a timely overhaul. Now, Graves said, "the motor is a thing of beauty." The car was then trucked to Kansas City, where the cosmetic imperfections were cured. When it rolled out of that shop on its 119-inch wheelbase, it looked better than new. "They made it whole again," Graves said. In 2003, he flew to Washington to report for duty as the President of the American Trucking Association in Alexandria. His cherished Chevrolet came later, in the same moving van as his household goods. The restored Chevrolet stands 55.8 inches high and is 77 inches wide. It easily fitted inside the mover's trailer. After the trip, the fluids were replaced, which meant filling the 20 gallon gasoline tank, adding five quarts of oil to the engine and 22 quarts of coolant to the radiator. Now that the Graves family is settled in McLean, the former governor and his car have been reunited. The Impala may not have Chevrolet pickup running boards to create a dramatic finishing touch but the former posses the attributes that Graves desire. He said that he has driven the rebuilt engine a mere 2,417 miles. With a four-barrel carburetor feeding premium fuel to the big engine, it generates potent 340 horsepower. According to the automakers records only 3,555 Impala Super Sport models were manufactured during the 1964 model year. Each one carried a base price of $3,196. To make driving easier, Graves has added power steering to his Chevrolet. As a concession to safety, especially when his daughter is a passenger, seat belts have been installed. Occasionally, he will pick up his daughter at her school while driving the red convertible. "It makes quite an impression in the car-pool lane," he conceded. A reverberator on the radio was a famed addition when the car was new. In the late 1950s, the automakers chief engineer described the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen." For many years, the Impala was the best selling vehicle in the United States, and its 1965 sales of over one million units remain as an unbeatable record.Es3

Now in its second season, Channel 10s Supernatural intends to show other big stars aside from brothers Dean and Sam Winchester. And that big star is the ?7 Impala - a big black American muscle car. Many viewers wondered what kind of car the Winchester brothers drive. Actually, the car owned by older brother Dean is, in fact, a four-door 1967 Chevrolet Impala. When the car was destroyed at the end of the first season, Eric Kripke, the creator of the show Supernatural, divulged he was inundated with letters from fans wanting to know if the vehicle was going to make a return. When I was originally writing the show I wanted to give the guys an American muscle car,?Kripke said. My first choice was a '65 Mustang. My neighbor said it had to be a '67 Impala because you can put a body in the trunk. He says, 'You want a car that, when people stop next to it at the lights, they lock their doors'.?br />The Impala, launched in 1958 as an upmarket, sporty product line for Bel Air coupes and convertibles, features classic styling cues that include six taillights. In 1959, the car became a separate model in both two- and four-door versions. Eventually, the car became the best-selling car in the Chevrolet lineup. Starting in 1960, the car holds the best-seller title for the next decade. To stress, from 1958 until 1966, sales of the Impala were in excess of 13 million units, more than any other full-size car in the auto history. The 1967 model as featured on the show came with a choice of inline six-cylinder as well as the famous Chevy small-block and big-block V8s. The Impala may not be featuring some renowned parts like the Chevrolet pickup overhead racks but the car makes history by itself. Ed Cole, Chevrolet's chief engineer in the late 1950s, defined the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen.?Five black Impalas are utilized in the production of the Supernatural. The Impala has a Sedgwick County, Kansas license plate KAZ 2Y5, a reference to Kansas, the lead stars?home state. The Impala has been nicknamed the Metallicar by fans of the show. The car takes its name from the speedy antelope found on the grasslands of central and southern of Africa. The two-door Super Sport version of the car is credited for the inception of the muscle car milieu. For the 2009 or 2010 model year, the Impala will be heavily redesigned.

In the late 1950s, the automakers chief engineer described the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen." For many years, the Impala was the best selling vehicle in the United States, and its 1965 sales of over one million units remain as an unbeatable record.

Connellsville, PA shows off electric Chevy Impala police car

Being green is all the rage these days, but for some, it's also economical. That's the thought behind the Connellsville, PA Police Department's newest cruiser, a 2000 Chevrolet Impala converted into an all-electric vehicle. The car was just delivered to the precinct today from United First Responders, LLC, the company who built the prototype EV cop car and will be monitoring its use over the next two years. The electric fuzz buster will operate for a full eight hour shift on one charge, and using a 240-volt outlet will recharge fully in just two hours. On pure electrons, that 8-hour shift will cost the city only 35 cents, compared to between $3 and $4 for a gas-powered cruiser. The battery back will last about five years, but the car is limited by its aversion to heavy rain, which could damage the electrical circuits. That's a significant limitation they should look into fixing quickly, as criminals all over Connellsville will have a field day during Spring when April showers begin to fall.

'67 Chevrolet Impala Goes Supernatural

The 1967 Chevrolet Impala went the extra mile to become a supernatural car. Not that it became a shaman or something magical - the Impala is part of a paranormal television series dubbed Supernatural.?br />
In the Supernatural show, Winchester brothers travel the highways and minor roads of North America in quest of their missing father. Along the way they stumble upon various evil spirits with which they fight.

He says, 'You want a car that, when people stop next to it at the lights, they lock their doors'.?br />
The Impala, launched in 1958 as an upmarket, sporty product line for Bel Air coupes and convertibles, features classic styling cues that include six taillights.

In 1965, the car etched an all-time annual sales record of more than one million units in the United States. Up until the present time, the record of more than 13 million sales has never been surpassed.

In 1973, when energy crisis became a big headache, sales of the car declines. This event has prompted the automaker to redesign the car to meet the changing demands of the purchasers. The production of the car continues to this day. The 1967 model as featured on the show came with a choice of inline six-cylinder as well as the famous Chevy small-block and big-block V8s.

The Impala may not be featuring some renowned parts like the Chevrolet pickup overhead racks but the car makes history by itself. Ed Cole, Chevrolet's chief engineer in the late 1950s, defined the Impala as a "prestige car within the reach of the average American citizen.?

Five black Impalas are utilized in the production of the Supernatural. In the pilot episode, the Impala's huge trunk is revealed to hold a traveling armory of weapons used by the Winchesters to fight the supernatural forces. The Impala has a Sedgwick County, Kansas license plate KAZ 2Y5, a reference to Kansas, the lead stars?home state.

Print Ad - `59 Chevy Nomad Wagon

Over the years I've received emails from people saying they have or have seen `59 Nomad wagons; some of the folks don't believe they existed, while others have examples in their possession. Most people are familiar with the most famous two-door Nomads built between 1955 and 1957, but have no idea what happened to the model after that time.

Well I'm here to tell you they did exist. In 1958 the Nomad was continued as a four-door wagon at the top end of the trim level equal to the newly introduced Impala. The 1959 Chevrolet Nomad was Model 1735 with a six-cylinder and 1835 with a V8. In place of the I-M-P-A-L-A letters on the side there stood N-O-M-A-D instead. It was the most expensive model for the year, with a price of $3009 that was higher than even the Impala convertible ($2967). The Nomad was highly optioned like the Impala in the way that a Cadillac Escalade can be considered a highly optioned GMC Denali.

In this add you will see the Nomad in paint code 905-A Highland Green. Crossed flags on the hood mark a 348 powered car (not surprising for a high-end wagon). It's also sporting the "California one-piece" front bumper and chrome trim behind the spears along the tops of the front fenders. As a higher end model, it would also have more brightwork along the lower half of the dashboard, and as a Nomad it would have more chrome around the door pillars.

The Brookwood in the lower part of the ad - a Biscayne trimmed two-door wagon now heavily sought after by classic car enthusiasts - is shown in two-tone color code 973 (Roman Red and Snowcrest White). The Bel Air level Parkwood is Harbor Blue code 912-A with "dog dish" hub caps. The Kingswood wagon with Impala level trim is shown in two-tone color code 963 (Crown Sapphire and Snowcrest White).
